SEVEN CONCERTS IN 2010
2010 will be another exceptionally busy year for Clerorfa, the Welsh Folk Orchestra, with seven concerts now confirmed. The members come from all parts of Wales and the series of concerts mean that they are already meeting on a regular basis to rehearse. It also means that the administration and organising work is increasing all the time! All members are amateurs and the organising work is done on a voluntary basis.
The highlight of the year will be taking part in the big Celtic concert in the Millenium Centre on May 1st.
The first concert of the year will be in Rhyl Pavilion on 7th March and the last will be in Aberystwyth on November 6th. This is the full list:
7 March – Rhyl Pavilion (a concert to raise money for good causes, with Mark Evans, Côr Rhuthun and Côr Ysgol Glan Clwyd)
8 April - Galeri, Caernarfon (part of the International Harp Festival, with Sian James)
1 May – Millenium Centre (with Calan, Sian James, Nolwen Korbell, Lleuwen Steffan and a Bagad – pipe band - from Brittany)
2 July – Ruthin Festival
22 August - Gŵyl Tegeingl Festival, Mold
16 October – Ucheldre Arts Centre, Holyhead (opening concert of the Holyhead Arts Festival)
6 November – Arts Centre, Aberystwyth
The Clerorfa is the first orchestra of its kind in Wales, drawing its members from Clera, the Welsh Traditional Instrument Society. Many of the members first came together for the Clera 10th anniversary concert in Caernarfon in November 2006. It was as a result of the enthusiastic response to that concert that the orchestra was established in earnest. Since then the group have gone from strength to strength, with 60 members at present, and another 30 other applications to join.
The aim of Clerorfa is to present Welsh traditional music – including many new and original tunes in the traditional idiom – in a lively and exciting way, and hopefully to breathe new life into the Welsh folk scene as a result.
The Musical Directors of Clerorfa are: Stephen Rees (Cadeirydd Clera) and Robin Huw Bowen.
